As a significant reworking of an existing Victorian-era corner store, LSH Residence reinstates permanence and a generosity of scale through a contemporary lens. Davidov Architects conjures a calm and cleanly conceived series of spaces with associated framed portals to the surrounding landscape.

Without competing with the existing heritage, LSH Residence is instead intended as its own commanding presence and as an offer of balance. Refinement and restraint underpin the approach in transforming the ill-fitting addition to the existing Victorian-era building. Originally a corner store with adjoining accommodation to the rear, the building inherited a number of renovations over the years that added little to its storied past and, due to the quality of their workmanship, were not able to stand the tests of time. In stripping these back to the original wedge-shaped form, the new elements are added with precision and consideration for the existing, while restoring its character and charm. Davidov Architects consequently re-sculpts a sense of meaning and identity, proposing a home of lasting fortitude.

Nestled into Albert Park amongst other similar-era homes and other associated buildings, the proposal draws from a shared longevity and presence. In preserving the character of the area, there is a shared celebration of the time that the suburb was founded. Through the use of clean lines, an imposed classical rhythm to the façade and how the planning unfolds, the resulting home feels relevant across any number of time periods. In stripping the ornamental, a more refined series of spaces flow from one into another, with frameless glass windows and doors creating uninterrupted visual access between the interior and the landscape.

Originally with three separate entries and dark and separated rooms, the main priority was to infuse natural light and to open up the spaces to ensure a sense of flow. By overhauling the planning, with the addition of bedrooms, bathrooms and a study, the new is hinged together with a monumental stair that connected the levels. The use of a skylight above the stair then brings natural light deep into the home while increasing a sense of scale and proportion. A rear open courtyard space offers itself as an intimate escape, with a private outlook for the residents, made all the more precious due to the rarity of outdoor space in urban areas.

With its neutral palette and minimalist form, LSH Residence ensures a classical feel and proportions are accentuated. Harnessing this timeless palette and drawing on the varying qualities of natural light, Davidov Architects emphasise a sense of stillness throughout.
