Moon House
Designed by Sydney-based firm James Garvan Architecture, Moon House is a soft, playful addition to its streetscape that delights with its unexpected composition.
In a world of right-angle restraint, Moon House is a welcome reprieve, featuring sweeping curves and dramatic arches. With a playful spirit rendered in serious materials, the home is instilled with fluid notions of light and movement, feeling buoyant despite the robust materiality.

Upon entering the house, the ground floor opens into a generous space fit for hosting and gathering. The open-plan layout is a familiar staple of contemporary design, but here, its execution elevates the habitants’ lived experience. Joinery is used to create smaller defined zones, allowing the room to shift between small and large activities. One feels permission to explore the space, finding pockets and moments of calm within the overall scheme.
At the centre of the living and dining space, the impressive island bench anchors the home with quiet confidence. It’s scale grounds the minimal aesthetic surrounding it, providing a natural gravitational point for the family to perch and interact around. The rest of the kitchen is cocooned in timber, creating a warm and comforting experience day to day.
Though the footprint isn’t vast, the intentionality of the planning has made every inch count in Moon House. The rear landscape reads as a natural continuation of the living space, the boundary between the two zones dissolving with expansive glazing and a wealth of natural light.
Moon House by James Garvan Architecture is a joyful and vivacious family home that champions a feeling of levity. Gentle curves, bold arches and the contrast between delicate tones and robust materiality provide an engaging experience for both passers-by and inhabitants.
