About

Navigating Novation & Protecting Design, hosted by the Australian Institute of Architects, will discuss the common contracts used by large architectural practices and convey how the role of architects varies considerably between these contracts. Novation will be a focus as it is being used at an increasing rate with many new large-scale works. The demand for understanding the reason why Novation stems from the need to understand what can be done to make this process more positive for architects whilst meeting project outcomes.

Over the two sessions, our experienced practitioners will discuss key issues with the scope of services, protecting design and will analyse different contractual conditions. They will explain how to work through key contractual aspects identifying what to add into contracts and clauses to be aware of.

Andy Gentry is the Principal of Woods Bagot.  Since immigrating to Australia 22 years ago, Andy has been involved in some of Melbourne’s largest and most complex projects, often leading collaborative, joint venture design teams on major projects such as the Melbourne Convention Centre, Melbourne Park Stage 1 Redevelopment, The Urban Workshop and QV1 Apartments.

Largely due to their complexity, but also because of new procurement models, Andy manages the highly coordinated and integrated project requirements to meet client, governance and multiple stakeholder demands. He also understands the challenges of competing interests while ensuring the integrity of the creative design response.

In his role of Executive Chair, Andy is the Principal responsible for the management of Woods Bagot’s Melbourne Studio.

Bill Krotiris is the Principal of John Wardle Architects. He has practised Architecture for over thirty years and has been at John Wardle Architects since 2004. In 2005 Bill was made a Senior Associate and a Principal in 2014. Bill has an outstanding architectural pedigree that centres around large-scale commercial, residential and institutional projects. His natural aptitude for communication and collaboration sees him assuredly leading complex projects to successful outcomes.

Intrinsic to much of JWA’s competition work; Bill is skilled in deciphering a brief and focusing on the commercial imperatives to maximise design considerations and client aspirations.

As an intelligent and tenacious leader, Bill has provided insight and direction for many of John Wardle Architects key projects, such as the York & George development in Sydney, the award-winning Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies in Tasmania, and the more recent Spire Apartments in Brisbane.

Wendy Poulton is the Manager of Risk Services at informed. Informed is part of Planned Cover, which has successfully managed the Architects Professional Indemnity Insurance Facility since 1974 by delivering insurance, risk management and claims management programs for the majority of architectural practices in Australia.

At Planned Cover, Wendy’s strengths are in providing straightforward advice on consultancy agreements, training consultants in risk management, and creating guidance materials on emerging challenges in the construction industry.

She was admitted as a solicitor in 1997, and completed a Masters in Construction Law in 2011. Using her extensive experience, she has contributed to many professional development seminars at the Institute as well as tutoring young graduates for the PALS (Practice of Architecture Learning Series) program.
