Five Yards House

A clever design which has fused together modern contemporary and rustic architecture.
Five Yards House has been cleverly designed to reflect the owner’s passion for gardening and natural beauty. Houses in Tasmania are often surrounded by views of the ocean or mountains, with that in mind, Archier designed a rustic, but modern take on contemporary Tasmanian lifestyle.
Inspired by the owner’s passion for gardening and the surrounding natural beauty, Archier constructed a stunning contrast between the single storey’s home black-finished exterior and the evolving lushness of the garden.
By adding black-powder coated aluminium window frames and glazing, the space allows for the outside to be part of the inside. The resulting views are vignettes of an expansive garden, with each room connecting with an outside courtyard, making the interior seem considerably bigger than it actually is.
Tasmanian oak was used throughout, its caramel tones are in high contrast against the built-in storage units and shelving systems, which are all finished in black. This contrast is also adapted into the ceiling and exterior cladding. These dark features interrupt the patchwork arrangement and prevent each space from appearing overly cluttered.
The full walls of double glazing and restrained material palette throughout each space, strengthens the connection between the inside and the out, creating a sense of space, which is effectively doubled without the use of any formal structures. The result is a stunning and clever fusion of modern lines and rustic personality throughout each space.
