From The Designer
The cafe is located within an original Tudor Style Garage, we wanted to honour the buildings past, so we researched traditional Tudor construction methods, we then worked to re-work these ideas in a contemporary execution of that idea. For example, all furniture is constructed from traditional Mortise and Tenon joints, brick floors laid in a herringbone application etc. Subtly of this execution was the key, they’re “barely there” details, yet still there for a keen observer to recognise. We enhanced the site with its own veggie patch out the back for the Chef to use daily and paid particular attention to the front exterior area, planting established trees and providing lots of outdoor seating.
When we approach a space, it’s very much about assessing what clues the site can give us about how to approach the design. With Glovers Station, given the site’s distinctive bones and Tudor heritage it was very clear to us how to respond, it was as if there was only one answer. To be true to the heritage and reinterpret that in a contemporary manner.
Designer Larritt-Evans (Market Lane Prahran and Therry Street) kept the fit-out sympathetic to the space’s Tudor architecture.
