Broached Goulder Sewing Box

Jon Goulder

Many pieces of furniture served functions that no longer exist in contemporary households. Sewing and mending clothes used to be standard in most homes. This piece is an abridged version of the mid 19th C sewing table, which had a cloth bag on the underside of the table to store the sewing materials and tools.

This object provides for daily accessible storage within the open ‘bag’ and then more discrete storage within the liftable lid. It is designed to fit perfectly on top of a generously sized console, credenza or kitchen island.

About The Designer

Jon Goulder has walked the fine line between a professional role as a mentor and running a private design practice his whole adult life. Whilst many of his peers sustain themselves through part-time academic work, Jon has been a long-time nomad, moving from Sydney to Perth and now Adelaide to fulfil senior roles in craft organisations as a creative director whilst simultaneously growing a studio practice defined by commissions and royalty-based contracts with manufacturers. Jon creates highly sensuous design with a strong focus on craftsmanship. Jon has received several design prizes and his work is held in permanent collections by many local state and national museums and art galleries including the National Gallery of Australia and Art Gallery of South Australia.
