Growing up in a creative household, Daniel Boddam was almost destined to work as an architect and interior designer. Both his parents are architects and instilled an early appreciation for natural materials, objects and the fundamental architectural principles of composition, function, proportion and light.

Combining architecture, interior design and furniture as a singular vision, Daniel’s approach to design is holistic, resulting in cohesive spaces that embrace his design philosophy of considered simplicity. Daniel explains ‘I’m committed to creating unique environments for clients. It is a delicate balance. The site must be responsive and environmentally sensitive, and the design must be progressive yet enduring.’’

Daniel founded his studio in 2013, specialising in refined residential projects. Combining all aspects of design, Daniel believes: ‘we have been able to enhance our clients’ lifestyles through the environments we create.’’

Daniel’s open, honest and unrestrained approach to his projects often results in an instinctive evolution of the design characteristics. ‘’I like to start each project with an open mind and not a set outcome. I encourage my clients to do the same, as the best results come to fruition when things aren’t forced and can evolve naturally,’’ says Daniel.

The studio’s latest project, Methuen residence, is a pristine example of Daniel’s design ethos in existence. Originally a Californian bungalow, Daniel was commissioned to reinterpret the site and its potential. What has been created is a harmonious fusion between the old and the new. Each element has been deeply considered and holds its own within the space. Particular consideration has been given to the internal environment and how the occupants can control it. Daniel explains, ‘The upper floor acts as the lungs of the building, allowing the sea breeze to permeate throughout as well as promoting stack effect ventilation.’’

Light and shade create a stunning display within the stairwell.

External Venetian blinds and shutters allow the sun to naturally heat the house in winter whilst providing shade in the warmer months. A single beam of northern light provides tension in the staircase, playfully throwing light. Overhead, a southern skylight provides diffused light. ‘The house has been nestled into the site, promoting responsive design that enhances characteristics such as natural light and connections with nature, while capturing the prevailing sea breezes as and when desired’, Daniel says.

The use of internal sheer curtains creates diffused lighting and privacy within the home.

The design is simple but sophisticated. The use of raw materials, intelligent use of natural light and pared back furnishings enhance the feeling of space. Ocean views have been captured in the master bedroom over iconic Balmoral beach, blurring the line between outside and in.

The initial client brief, to create the feeling of a holiday at home, has been captured in every essence. ‘The use of warm, neutral tones within the interior creates an inviting and relaxed environment. The exterior is shaped by strong lines and pavilions of timber, masonry and stone. These layers soften and add sophistication to the overall look and feel’, Daniel explains. The cohesion between the interior and exterior spaces creates a compelling and connected feeling as you move throughout the residence.

No detail has been overlooked, with specific attention given to the custom craftsmanship. ‘Bespoke handles, doors and furniture were made for the house to create a luxurious, functional and seamless environment. It is a project where I was able to explicitly design every element. It was such an enjoyable process, that has resulted in a distinctive and much-loved home’.
