Northcote House designed by Taylor Knights Interior Design & Architecture is an alteration and addition to a residential home that seamlessly combines modern and heritage elements throughout its spatial dwellings.
Taylor Knights have created a new home that maintains the heritage frontage of the building whilst adding a modern light filled, double storey addition to the rear.
Home to a growing family who love to entertain, the clients brief was for four bedrooms with two living rooms, open plan kitchen, dining, lounge area and a rooftop terrace, all within a modest building footprint.
The Northcote House is situated on a long and narrow block with a south facing backyard and secondary rear lane access. The key driver behind the project was to bring northern light into the new contemporary extension while retaining as much of the beautiful backyard as possible. The existing terrace house layout is laid out in a ‘shotgun style’ plan with rooms coming off a side corridor with limited views and natural light.
The front three rooms of the home were retained and restored by Taylor Knights in order to maintain and pay tribute the original heritage architecture of the building. Highlights from the new design include a front hallway steel portal that provides a threshold between the past and present, a double height void with northern clerestory windows and a void that provides ventilation, sky views and extra light into the rooms above.
Taylor Knights added a modern open plan kitchen, dining and living spaces that look out towards the rear yard as well as a built-in daybed in the living room that can be used for quiet reflection and reading by members of the family.
Moving onto the full height joinery wall containing a European laundry, we can see how these were created to minimise the footprint of the building through smart storage.
The overall adaptability of the home is typified by the small study space and flexible room that can be used as a nursery, hobby room or spare bedroom. In this same room shutters have been installed to provide a further degree of privacy.
Finally we move onto the breathtaking rooftop deck running North-South. The deck is set back from the boundaries to provide stunning city views without overlooking nosey neighbours.
