Defined by natural light, this Victorian Cottage renovation by Mittelman Amsellem Architects in South Yarra is an exploration into the continuity of space and form.
A refined and fresh material palette provides the canvas for abundant changes in direct sunlight. Each room woven into a composition of skyward views, the exterior and interior become a single experience.
This space is one of eight heritage listed, terraced single story dwellings, all visually demonstrated as a continuous street façade, the project site shares a boundary with both northern and southern neighbours.
The architects wanted to fully respect the visual scale and historical value of the streetscape. This extension maintains the heritage listed façade and chimney of the existing dwelling, by designing an extension behind the main ridgeline, completely concealed from street views. This creates a unique transition into the core of the home, through an intentional contrast between the old and new architecture.
By preserving remnants of the original home such as the front bedrooms and the traditional chimney, and introducing a bespoke contemporary design language of space and materiality, the result is an innovative and captivating solution enabling abundant natural light to shine through into a narrow entry corridor from above.
The design of the project enabled a carving of the existing Victorian Cottage with natural sunlight, exploring continuity of space into another, revealing form and function. This stunning residential home stands tall amongst the design centric suburb of South Yarra in Melbourne.
