The Silverleaves Project by Beaumont Concepts is a simple yet contemporary beach house for holiday letting and personal use.
Beaumont Concepts placed an emphasis on cost effective construction that integrated aspects of its beachside location with views of the natural coastal surroundings. The design also reduced the impact on the existing vegetation of the natural environment.
The design brief stipulated a low maintenance holiday home that combined functional spaces within a small footprint to respond to aspirations in sustainability and long term operational savings. Aesthetically the home needed to engage with the surrounding coastal landscape and provide a balance between protection and prospect.
The Silverleaves design ensures the house not only sits comfortably within the environment, but also actively benefits from it via passive solar principals. In both functional and aesthetic terms, the house is very much a reflection of a perfect coastal holiday retreat.
The building steps around the trunks of established trees, allowing much of the existing landscape to be retained.
The architectural form of the house is pleasantly straightforward. Aligned on an east–west axis, it opens out towards the north before reaching back into the rear of the site. The main living area and bedrooms are located around a central deck area to encourage flow of internal areas onto a communal entertaining area and capture sweeping views over the surrounding vegetation.
In both functional and aesthetic terms, the house is very much a reflection of the clients themselves. Aspects of their lives have influenced the final design such as their appreciation of locally sourced natural materials such as timber. The clients sustainable sentiment coupled with concepts of simplicity, thoughtfulness and warmth are embodied in the minimalist sensibility of the design and the modest scale of the building itself.
Considered detailing transforms a relatively humble selection of materials into a rich architectural language. The warm tones of the spotted gum radial timber cladding give the home a stealth-like quality that allows it to recede into the surrounding foliage. The use of timber continues inside, bringing a softness and warmth to the otherwise restrained interior.
The efficient floor plan balances the communal aspects of domestic life and holiday entertaining with opportunities for private retreat. The plan hinges on a central galley kitchen that bridges the open-plan living area and the more intimate bedroom wing. The living area itself responds to the complex nature of family life with several interconnected spaces that allow for multiple overlapping activities.
The house boasts 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a separate powder room, rumpus room for the kids and an outdoor shower for a post surf rinse off. The centrepiece is the large kitchen/family room area bound by extensive sliding door systems.
Internally all rooms are light, bright, comfortable and most importantly easy to keep clean and uncluttered. The homes ambience is reflective of its relaxed holiday intentions.
The study nook easily accommodates all of today’s necessary technological gadgets in a purpose built joinery unit. A bank of PowerPoints allows a dedicated place for charging and keeps these items in a neat area out of the way.
