Links Courtyard House

The house sits on the edge of a links style coastal golf course, tucked in behind a stand of Cypress trees. The house benefits greatly from the golf course outlook, but in its own way, it also contributes to the landscape experience from the golf course side as well. The house is a single storey holiday home of modest proportions which favours simplicity over size. A single living/dining/kitchen space, 2 bedrooms, a sitting room and a double garage make up the main areas. The tight planning carries on into the disciplined detailing of the spatial sequence.

Restraint is evident in the neutral palette of materials: silver stained blackbutt timber, grey cement render, dark grey steel, oak floor boards and ceiling finishes are used throughout. While the home’s front elevation is relatively ‘closed’, the interior immediately exposes views of the golf course to the east and the delightful courtyard garden featuring a rich variety of colours and textures and swimming pool to the north. The aim was to keep the site as open to its environment as possible – to create a meaningful dialogue between private spaces and the surrounding nature.
