Winter Street Residence
by B. E. Architecture
Our Winter Street Residence in Malvern was an example of reworking a traditional period residence to create a vibrant modern house for a young family. The front four period rooms were rebuilt to contain the master bedroom functions and formal living rooms. The traditional front entry through this area was moved to the side of the house giving privacy for these areas. Guests approach the entry down a landscaped garden entering the rear pavilion space of the kitchen and family living rooms. The rebuilt period section of the house utilises our practice’s technique of reworking traditional detailing while the rear is finished in a restrained modernism of custom-made terrazzo tiles and concrete and wood. The house faces north so to bring light in the rear living areas, a central courtyard was created to allow the rear rooms to also enjoy this orientation. People are attracted to period buildings for their details and craftsmanship so while the building was substantially rebuilt the new aesthetic used in many of our renovations paid reference to those traditions.
