Light and Natural – Rozelle House by Avenue One Design and Bone Made
Reworking a traditional terrace home in Sydney’s inner west, Rozelle House combines a light-filled series of spaces with an emphasis on connection. Together with Bone Made, Avenue One Design carefully crafts a considered residence, combining natural and textural elements amongst the smooth and refined.
Through a reinstating of the original grandeur of the heritage home, Rozelle House is lifted from its multiple layers of renovations over time and brought together with a clear and logical focus on connection. As the levels connect vertically and how the interior and exterior spaces speak to one another, there is a deliberate sense of flow, emphasised through materiality and consistency. Over its three levels, the otherwise narrow terrace home retains remnants of its previous charm and carefully weaves in a contemporary freshness to each of the spaces. With architecture by Avenue One Design and interior design by Bone Made, the resulting home becomes naturally light filled, allowing for new relationships to form internally and within the site.
In its same-named locale, Rozelle House is built by Vista Build and encompasses both a renovation and extension effort, ensuring a coherent resolve. All areas of the structure were touched in some way, elevating the previous home while preserving the story of its past and its previous makers. In the process of creating more meaningful and clear connections between the past and present, a shared tonality binds each of the spaces; the new is blanketed with a consistent and mostly white palette, highlighting the character and heritage detailing but also giving a shared subtlety. Bringing functions together within the new opened areas transports the home into its own present relevance.
Combined with a neutral and light base, natural and textural layers are added to multiple planes, ensuring the newly introduced light creates unique patterns as it interacts with the home. Classical references of symmetry underpin the interiors approach and connect to the formality of the home’s past, as well as a sense of control and order needed within the new. By adding tactile elements and creating unique and unexpected moments throughout, there is a freshness in the expression of the owners’ personality and how they interact with their home.
Rozelle House embodies an open and energetic lightness. Avenue One Design and Bone Made have anchored the home’s elements, aligning them with a sense of contemporary tradition.
