Helle Mardahl Arrives at In Good Company
Unifying art and functionality, Danish design brand Helle Mardahl’s handcrafted glassware evokes a joyful sense of imagination inspired by children’s fairy tales and indulgent confections. For Melbourne design retailer In Good Company, the delightful objects contribute an elegant eccentricity to its portfolio of local and international furniture, lighting and artwork.
Helle Mardahl adopts the timeless artisan methods of glass-blowing to create dynamic and whimsical vessels that reflect a conceptual interpretation of endearing stories; the likes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland are evident in each and every candy-like art piece. The nature of the glass-blowing process, a precise exercise requiring patience and appreciation, produces unpredictable variations in form and finish, the result of which is a series of unique pieces that describe a delicately crafted love story between artist and material.
The latest collection of glassware, appropriately titled ‘Sweet Illusions’, is conceived as elements of a candy universe, described by Helle as manifestations of alluring flavour, “a freshly picked cherry, pink bubblegum and the first plum of the season.” Each item of the collection could be easily mistaken for indulgent confectionery, transforming familiar items into playful relics of a magical reality – a visual feast characterised by beautiful shapes and silhouettes, exciting colours and hues capable of stimulating the eyes and taste-buds both.
Such are the pieces included within the Danish design collection at In Good Company alongside furniture, lighting, and artwork from the likes of Gubi, Muuto and Ferm Living. In Good Company will be home to several signature glassware products from Helle Mardahl including the Bonbonnierie – one of the studio’s first pieces to emerge from the candy universe – alongside versatile tableware, elegant lighting and abstract sculptures.
