A Sustainable Future — Brickworks Bricks
Refining the built environment, Brickworks is a leading manufacturer of sustainable building materials. A determined leader in its field, the company champions brick as being key to elevated and sustainable architectural design.
Founded in 1934, Brickworks has grown to become one of the largest building material manufacturers in the world. Producing long-lasting solutions guaranteed to last for 100 years, which can withstand all weather conditions and also be easily re-used and recycled, the company has sustainability in its DNA.
In contrast to alternatives such as lightweight board materials, brick possesses many inherent advantages. Bricks are maintenance-free – they do not fade, rust or rot. Unlike glass and fibre cement, bricks are fireproof and do not risk shattering. Colour is retained for the lifetime of the product. The thermal properties of brick enable houses to remain cool in summer and retain heat in winter. Offering acoustic insulation and allowing moisture to escape the home, the material establishes comfortable interior environments, without the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Recognising the benefits of brick construction, the material is favoured by many leading architects. Evidencing the intuitive nature of brick as a building material, Iredale Pederson Hook Architects in collaboration with Caroline Di Costa Architect used Brickworks bricks in the design of Casa Mia. Constructed from Austral Bricks Indulgence in Salted Praline, Metallix in Carbide, Burlesque in Charming Black and Venetian Glass in Golden Amber, Casa Mia has a reassuring structural integrity. Metallix bricks are employed around openings to bounce natural light into the home, allowing residents to save energy. For paving, Austral Bricks Pure Earth Face Brick in Jackson and Kingston colours also feature, maintaining an elegant appearance under heavy foot traffic.
The thermal benefits of brick are honed in Brunswick House by Placement. In response to the client’s request for a residence that felt honest, warm and unpretentious, Nubrick Artisan bricks in the colour Wolf were selected for an understated solution. As a high-density material, the bricks effectively absorb and store heat, regulating the internal temperature of the home to maximise interior comfort and reduce energy bills. The bricks thus reduce the need for artificial heating and cooling, performing efficiently in the Australian climate.
In addition to the properties of its products, Brickworks has been awarded for its carbon-neutral offering. A Climate Active Product Certification was achieved for the Tasmanian Austral Bricks factory, the first manufacturing site in Australia to provide certified carbon-neutral bricks. For its opt-in program dedicated to architects, commercial builders and developers, which allows professionals to purchase the carbon-neutral brick and paver products from any Australian factory, Brickworks received a second Climate Active Product Certification.
Surpassing alternative materials in resilience and thermal performance, Brickworks bricks are the enduring solution to modern construction. Embraced by Australia’s pioneering architects and designers, the material is key to building a more sustainable future.
