Redefining small-scale living, Pop Top House gives new meaning to condensed architecture, making use of underutilised airspace above an existing garage to establish an independent dwelling. Licht Architecture utilises simplicity and restraint to design a structure that connects to and expresses the lifestyle of the owners, adding amenity through a cleverly planned addition.

Located just north of Hobart in New Town, Pop Top House sees the creation of a newly independent space within the existing residence. Taking position above the garage, the new form extrudes upward as an extension of the footprint below, taking full advantage of the internal gable space within. The elevated positioning of the home enables access to aspects beyond the site, providing views out toward the northern suburbs and kunanyi (Mount Wellington). Licht Architecture adopts a sensitive approach and uses a calming palette and softly animated spaces that celebrate the concept of recharging.

As a response to the common condition of desiring more room within a challenging and restrained suburban site, the home’s proposal allows for the ability to increase the overall floor space. Due to its positioning away from the main house, the new extension offers a welcomed separation that is ideal for guests. Looking inward, a palette of neutral tones is used throughout, forming a flexible base. The bedroom and bathroom spaces are deepened in colour and tone, matching their more recessive nature. Timber is then used sparingly, adding a touch of warmth and natural texture throughout.

Sitting in close proximity to neighbouring homes, privacy was attained through using vertical battens that diffuse sightlines inward. The elevation of the main living areas also helps abate onlooking issues. By channelling and framing openings, the obscuring of visibility amplifies the home’s sense of seclusion. Internally, references to the exterior box window shapes and battens are reinterpreted in a more familiar scale, animating the interior and creating a cohesive design story.

Elevated and private, Pop Top House brings amplified value to the site beyond the additional floor space added. Creating a welcoming retreat for the owners, Licht Architecture has carved a unique hideaway in an optimal location.
