Cobram Library & Learning Centre
by Cohen Leigh Architects
This new library and learning centre in Cobram Victoria embraces emerging technologies and flexible learning for both children and adults.
Cohen Leigh Architects worked closely with community stakeholders to create the unique space that is the Cobram Library & Learning Centre, with the design process involving the idea of tracing the lines of the nearby Murray River, then superimposing this as the cut line on the curvilinear timber battened screen.
Located on the site of the existing Civic Centre, it encompasses library spaces, reading spaces, community spaces and new technology areas throughout.
Conscious of its place and identity, the Cobram Library & Learning Centre embodies and celebrates the idea of a local library, with design language which is evocative of the popular Murray landscapes of natural beauty.
The result is a dynamic façade which wraps the perimeter of the library, filtering and throwing light into the internal library spaces, and a central pathway and ceiling element; acting as a way-finding spine, runs through the centre of the library.
At its edges, a series of abstract architectural design punctuates the perimeter, allowing for private and flexible break areas. The effect is a community space both highly flexible and adaptable, depending on the occasion.
