Artist's Studio, Thornbury
by Chan Architecture
The Artist’s Studio Thornbury by Chan Architecture is an artist’s studio in the backyard of an existing house in Thornbury designed in collaboration with Phillip Johnson Landscaping.
The brief was to create a beautifully detailed, creative space for painting and sculpting that would encourage and inspire creativity. The studio was to sit comfortably within an organic landscape design which included a ‘natural’ pool and a waterfall area that would provide a recreational area for children.
Chan Architecture selected all natural materials for the outside of the studio. They placed an emphasis on timber that would silver over time, making it blend in with the natural colours of the landscape.
Blackbutt flooring and plywood were used on the floors, walls and ceiling of the studio to blur the traditional spatial boundaries of the building. This resulted in the creation of a unique, sculptural space that is warm and textured.
The roof of the studio is used to warm the water of the pool in the colder months, whilst the water from the roof runs down the decorative rain chain into the pool below. The overflow of the pool is then connected to a creek that runs through the backyard, beautifully connecting the different areas of the landscape.
