Carlton House
by Tom Robertson Architects
Carlton House by Tom Robertson Architects is a small and compact home which uses a bold roofline to bring light into the once dark spaces of this house.
This newly renovated monochrome house represents a sleep black and white façade of minimalist design, whilst the back of the house has been transformed to an impressive black double-height space of interesting angles, with a graphic colour scheme combined with the original bricks, giving the house an urban edge.
The site of this project is compact. To combat the size restrictions, architects incorporated a streamline kitchen within the open plan living area, which gives a sense of spaciousness. Light floods in from the mezzanine above and a beautiful timber staircase which runs down one side of the living space, gives access to the upper level. Finished with a white mesh balustrade that adds visual interest without blocking any light.
The main bathroom and ensuite maintain the same vibe as the rest of the monochrome house and features a grey terrazzo floor and wall tile. Bold black tapware and towel rails mimic the black window frames and details throughout the house. The large format tiles and consistent rectangle shapes, keeps everything throughout, crisp and clean.
Carlton House is a simple design aesthetic which sticks to a moody, yet comfortable palette for the interiors, warmed up with natural timbers and soft textiles. This house is a great example of how designers can modernise an older home using innovative ideas, to create a modern new space.
