Designed for Connection — A Four-Sofa Curation by Space Furniture
Space Furniture curates a selection of four sofas that redefine the modern living room, seamlessly blending comfort and versatility.
Sofas have evolved into pivotal elements of lounge rooms, transforming living spaces into hubs for relaxation, social connection and productivity. Space Furniture – home to one of the country’s most extensive ranges of contemporary designs from the world’s finest brands – understands this instinctively, and the four sofas in this curation not only embody innovation but are designed for connection, contributing to the transformative narrative of modern living.
B&B Italia’s Camaleonda stands as a timeless creation by Mario Bellini, originating in 1970 and rejuvenated in 2020. Several elements integral to the original remain, including the 90 centimetre x 90 centimetre seat modules, the backrest and armrest and Bellini’s inspired capitonné design. The breakthrough lies in its internal structure – a sustainable “sandwich” of recycled materials easily disassembled. Camaleonda’s modular design allows for dynamic reconfigurations, adapting to the user’s evolving needs while preserving the sofa’s distinctive identity.
As its name suggests, Piero Lissoni’s Extrasoft for Living Divani, conceptualised in 2008, brings a casual and restful dimension to modular sofas. It comprises luxuriously soft low geometric blocks of different dimensions in an undulating orthogonal form, and is redolent of the low-profile seating of the Middle East. Framed with double-panelled poplar and pine for indoor use, its goose-down cushions and clever Velcro fastenings offer a flexible seating arrangement limited only by the imagination.
On the Rocks by Francesco Binfaré for Edra challenges conventional sofa design, offering flexibility and comfort without a visible frame. Its innovative approach creates a holistic “domestic landscape”, inviting genuine engagement within the living space. Spacious and free of rigidity, the sofa’s silhouettes are moulded by hand in a blend of Gellyfoam and other foams, creating a soft sculptural form that evokes cosiness. Four independent seats in different shapes – three polygons and a quadrilateral – can be combined in myriad forms, while the two flexible backs can also be positioned for deep comfort.
Finally is Cini Boeri’s Strips for Arflex, a ground-breaking design from the late 1960s that revolutionised the furniture market with its low blocky form and polyurethane foam. Originally inspired by avant-garde artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the Strips range includes modular seating, sofas and beds that resemble building blocks wearing puffer coats. Its softly structured look, comprising a series of 31.5 centimetre squares, continues to provide inspiration: Patricia Urquiola’s Tufty-Time sofa (2005) – one of B&B Italia’s most successful pieces – is a homage to Boeri’s design.
