Inspired by the idea of living in a space that feels like a perpetual holiday, The Wharf Apartment has been renovated and opened up to the elements. Lawless & Meyerson adds upon the existing heritage of the building to create a calm sanctuary upon the water, retaining reminders of the past amid a contemporary and restrained interior.

The Wharf Apartment is reimagined through a modern and restorative lens. Wanting to elicit the feeling of its location – using the adjacency to Sydney Harbour as inspiration – the approach combines an ease of coastal casual with the elevation expected of inner-Sydney living. Lawless & Meyerson were engaged to integrate a more personalised approach, and contemporising the spaces reflects the way in which homes are occupied today.

The new works sit comfortably amid the industrial and heritage detailing of the structure. A palette of light tones is also utilised throughout, enhancing the sense of scale. Transforming the once two-bedroom home into a more intentional one-bedroom, the team ensures natural light is brought into each of the spaces, with the reflections off the water adding animation throughout the day.

The approach is inspired by being on a seaside vacation. The positioning of the apartment, which affords views of the marina, provides an outlook that elicits an immediate calmness. The sweeping views further enhance a feeling of connectedness, and the ability for the facade to be opened allows the everyday to spill out onto the deck. Natural materials and subtleties in textural differences create depth while ensuring the abode feels expansive and generous.

Balancing a cosmopolitan closeness to the CBD with a retreat-like sensibility, The Wharf Apartment has a transportive quality. The considered focus of Lawless & Meyerson to enhance the available space is what defines the home’s new chapter.
