Patchwork Architecture presents Fontbunker, a two-level form that sits independently from the main existing home dedicated to work, creativity and guest accommodation.

Fontbunker defies the typical expansion of an existing home – proposed as a separate destination. As a work and creative studio space, the physical separation is an important exercise in balance. Owners of Klim Type Foundry Kris and Jess Sowersby engaged Patchwork Architecture to explore the potential of their modestly sized allotment, aiming to merge life, work and leisure. “They were very detail-focused people,” adds Sally Ogle, director and co-founder of Patchwork Architecture.

Tying in the simplicity and elemental approach of the typical architectural language of New Zealand, the addition creates a singular retreat space separated from the main home, optimising views and connecting to the surrounding landscape meaningfully.

Accessed by an external concrete staircase, the guest accommodation sits on the uppermost floor of the new volume. The studio for Klim Type Foundry sits below, accessed at ground level. Wanting to enliven and bring purpose to an unused area, the owners worked closely with neighbours to find the right solution. With crafted details such as custom bronze fittings and hardware by local artist Ben Pearce, the response is deeply anchored within the surrounding context. The form symbolises the power of community coming together and adds a richness and supportive undertone to the greater urban tapestry. The integration of openings to frame views and bring natural light and air adds to its small environmental impact, as does an increased thermal efficiently aligned with the changing climate.

Fontbunker stands as a testament to the transformative power of considered and collaborative design. Patchwork Architecture demonstrates that even the most compact of spaces can become a sanctuary for creativity, productivity and relaxation.
