Situated on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the East Kulin nations, the interior of real estate agent Kay & Burton’s headquarters is set over two levels in the St Germain building in Melbourne’s Toorak.

Powell & Glenn has employed a clear layout for the space, alongside open workspaces, perfect for client meetings and collaboration. The building is surrounded by expansive views; the office takes advantage of this, creating a strong connection to the sights and easy access to natural light. Linking the two levels is a grand sculptural staircase, crowned with a pendant by Peter Cole.

From leather and velvet to stone and timber, each material balances against the other in a considered scheme that provides an interesting textural foundation.

The client-centric workplace’s warm and welcoming atmosphere is due to its material palette. Polished plaster ceilings are juxtaposed against textured rendered walls and timber cladding. Curved motifs are featured throughout the interior, seen in furniture pieces, mirrors and lighting, serving to gently soften the profile of the space. Sheer curtains contrast against the more robust materials. From leather and velvet to stone and timber, each material balances against the other in a considered scheme that provides an interesting textural foundation for the interior to unfold while being fitting for a commercial setting. Tonally, blues, purples, browns and greens feature within the palette and provide bold exchanges of colour and contrast.

The sophisticated interior aligns idyllically with the Kay & Burton brand, acting as a direct illustration of the homes the company represents. Powell & Glenn has referred to its residential portfolio to thoughtfully imbue this workplace with effervescence, comfort and attention to detail.
