Joyful House
by Mihaly Slocombe Architects
Joyful House created by Mihaly Slocombe Architects is a fun, friendly and brightly coloured addition to a weatherboard workers cottage on the outskirts of Geelong.
With a tight budget and an ambitious brief, the clients asked Mihaly Slocombe Architects to open up the rear of their house to provide space for their young, energetic family. A new grand room connects the original house to the garden, its dramatically sloping roof introducing light and space to the open plan living areas. A cheeky mezzanine study peaks over the top, making efficient use of the generous ceiling height.
Out towards the back garden, a new deck is covered with translucent fibreglass. It’s a great spot for a family barbecue, and the fibreglass makes sure plenty of natural light finds its way into the living room.
The Joyful House received critical acclaim after it was a finalist in the Residential Alterations section of the Architeam Awards. However, the most satisfying praise came from the clients who have openly commented on their love for the space and how the many different design elements combine to bring their family of five closer together.
