Lang 靚,meaning ‘pretty’ in Chinese and Cantonese, stands out in its South Yarra locale. Yet behind its striking, geometric facade lies a soft and discreet home that fosters wellness, creativity and movement, maximising the potential of a small, inner-city site.

Located just off the bustling Punt Road, the dwelling boasts a durable, minimalist grey facade that captivates at first sight. Its exterior is clad with heat-resistant equitone cement in a striking chevron pattern, complemented by a large, fluted glass panel. This feature not only ensures privacy but also floods the interior with ample natural light, enhancing the home’s welcoming ambience.

Once inside, the interior presents a stark contrast to the exterior; it is light, sinuous and spacious.

Once inside, the interior presents a stark contrast to the exterior; it is light, sinuous and spacious. The owners emphasised a desire for a unique layout without hallways and corridors, promoting an open, uncluttered feel that maximises space, natural light and greenery.

The kitchen, dining and living areas expand the full length of the residence and incorporate an internal courtyard garden. At the heart of the home, a sculptural, curved timber volume houses the bathrooms, harmonising the living spaces. Upstairs, a laundry, two bedrooms and a main bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite offer comfort and privacy. A versatile rumpus room – currently used as a playroom – connects these spaces and holds potential for future use as a study or parents’ retreat. Throughout the house, concealed storage enhances efficiency, adaptability and a clutter-free environment.

Most notably, the home integrates connections between indoor and outdoor spaces at every opportunity.

Most notably, the home integrates connections between indoor and outdoor spaces at every opportunity. Arranged around three distinct garden zones, large windows, openings and a void allow for continuous views of greenery and facilitate cross ventilation. This arrangement not only enhances the spaciousness of the dwelling but also creates a serene natural environment despite its inner-city location, encouraging outdoor living and movement.

Similar to its curved internal dimensions, the home features soft materials and textures dominated by muted tones. Natural timber walls and joinery balance with the concrete flooring, instilling a feeling of warmth and refinement. These gentle tones harmonise with lush foliage that graces nearly every corner of Lang 靚, with the olive green cabinetry in the main bedroom mirroring the verdant internal garden on the ground level.

Beyond the focus placed on landscaping, natural light and ventilation, the architect for Lang 靚 also prioritises sustainability. The design incorporates a solar system on the roof and strategic orientation to optimise the northern and eastern sunlight, promoting passive heating and cooling. Inside, energy conservation continues with LED light fittings, an energy-efficient fridge, oven and induction cooktop. Additionally, all gardens feature permeable surfaces that improve on-site water absorption.

Lang 靚 stands as a highly personalised and visually captivating residence. Austin Maynard Architects creates a home that offers a sanctuary of calm, inviting retreat and recalibration amid natural materials, abundant light and views of greenery from every angle.
