Williamsburg Townhouse by Home Studios
Shaped by the homeowners’ passion for entertaining, Williamsburg Townhouse is a reinvented quintessential Brooklyn brownstone with a blend of elements from classic New York hotels and charming French farmhouses, resulting in a vibrant family home for gathering and retreat.
Drawn to Home Studios’ cachet for creating some of New York’s most beloved hospitality projects, the homeowners enlisted the firm to transform their four-bedroom, three-bathroom townhouse into a richly layered space for living and entertaining. “One particular and unique request was the need for two kitchens, with one primarily for entertaining on the first floor, which led to the creation of two distinct kitchens subtly related in design,” says Oliver Haslegrave, founder and creative director of Home Studios.
The townhouse’s entry level is reworked as a captivating entertaining space, enhanced by the building’s original exposed timber beams and Home Studios’ use of rich materials, “reflecting the sophisticated ambience and vintage charm of certain New York hotel lobbies,” explains Haslegrave. Chequered tiles extend outwards to a terrace and outbuilding – “a jewel box retreat,” he describes – containing a screening room, hot tub and custom pizza oven. These vibrant settings serve as “a hidden oasis in the heart of Williamsburg – a haven for intimate gatherings in the midst of the bustling neighbourhood.”
Upstairs, the family’s shared spaces embrace a calm elegance and sense of old-world charm, boasting reclaimed oak floors, white walls and pale timber accents. 19th-century Portuguese facade tiles adorn the kitchen, complemented by zinc benchtops, brass tapware and painted oak cabinetry, altogether lending a sense of time-honoured warmth.
A partially below-ground cellar hosts the homeowner’s primary bedroom suite, grounded by a bespoke timber bed. Artisanal plaster walls by Ben Lai “add a subtle texture that complements the tranquil ambience,” says Haslegrave, accentuated by wool rugs and the gentle glow of custom blackened steel wall sconces. Beyond, swathes of inky blue zellige tiles line the ensuite, drawing focus to a striking copper bathtub.
Throughout, Home Studios has confidently layered Williamsburg Townhouse with a mix of furniture: “vintage heirlooms and traditional and contemporary handcrafted pieces from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries with eclectic details,” lists Haslegrave. Further enriched with bespoke elements designed in-house, including a travertine coffee table, walnut and linen floor lamp and copper-topped bar, the home encapsulates “diverse storytelling that prioritises the primacy of emotion.” Harnessing a hospitality-driven ethos, Williamsburg Townhouse meticulously crafts a a modern oasis for the homeowners and their guests – “a sanctuary from the busy world beyond its walls.”
