In the Melbourne Square precinct, east meets west in eight opulent new penthouses curated by renowned designer David Hicks, bringing new meaning to luxury living in the heart of the CBD.

Eight sumptuous penthouse residences have launched in BLVD, the latest tower in the new Melbourne Square precinct at Southbank. Globally renowned designer David Hicks has meticulously curated each residence – including The Garnet, a property spanning two levels at the tower’s pinnacle – for ultimate luxurious living, fusing eastern minimalism with a western sense of scale and elegance. Occupying the 73rd level and above, the penthouses also come with breathtaking panoramas. “You can really take in the landscape peacefully, its colours, textures and light mesmerising you like powerful artwork,” says Hicks. “We did not want to subtract from this impact and turned our interior aesthetic to more muted tones that give a sense of calmness.”

Minimalism, luxury and elegance are Hicks’s hallmarks, and these elements define the BLVD penthouses.

An east-meets-west flavour infuses each apartment, pulling cues from the life and experience of Hicks. Born in Australia, he was raised in Malaysia and his designs are holistically informed by his travels across continents and countries, offering a distinctive yet seamless global flair. Minimalism, luxury and elegance are Hicks’s hallmarks, and these elements define the BLVD penthouses. Architectural symmetry – nodding to both classical and modernist schools – is layered with intricate details and decor that combine to create timeless, artful living spaces.

The seductive, baroque traits of eastern design have been funnelled into quietly dramatic details such as textural Venetian plastering, striking marble surfaces and flooring, and metallic lacquered cabinetry. Serene eastern effortlessness melds with function in concealed kitchen appliances (including a walk-in fridge in The Garnet duplex penthouse) and storage veiled behind mirrored panels.

“Penthouse apartments offer scale and space which, with clever planning and detailed design, are the true benchmark of luxury living.”

Meanwhile, the scope and layout of the builds are purely western. Inspired by the elite penthouses on Manhattan’s ‘Billionaires’ Row’, each property boasts a streamlined, clutter-free layout executed using top-tier materials and is meticulously planned to maximise views of the city and bay beyond.

All eight residences, which range in size from 180 to 470 square metres, have been designed individually to the same standard as a standalone luxury home, guaranteeing a bespoke space for future owners and setting the development apart from other similar luxurious collections. “Penthouse apartments offer scale and space which, with clever planning and detailed design, are the true benchmark of luxury living,” says Hicks.

Residents enter The Garnet, a series of large-scale spaces set across two seamlessly entwined levels, via a formal lobby framing a sculptural white staircase grounded by a reflection pond. The surprises continue within, as a floor-to-ceiling, glass-framed wine cellar beckons guests further. Two contrasting marble designs on the island bench in the kitchen evoke the philosophy of yin and yang, while the main bedroom channels the world’s most luxurious hotel suites, replete with a dressing-room inspired by designer boutiques.

Each of the seven other penthouses is similarly distinctive, differing in size and layout – yet each shares a common grandeur and is designed to capture the sunlight and spectacular panoramic views. Residents enter via a private lobby, and every bedroom boasts an ensuite; main suites enjoy dressing-rooms. Every element fuses to elicit a new pinnacle in luxury inner-city living in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD.
