Wine Country Barn by Malcolm Davis Architecture
Driven by a passion for outdoor living, the owners of Wine Country Barn collaborated closely with Malcolm Davis Architecture to create a thoughtful and vibrant addition to their holiday home, fostering deeper connections in a unique space.
An escape from day-to-day life in San Francisco, Wine Country Barn is positioned as the idyllic getaway home in Healdsburg, California. The property was purchased with the intention to renovate, seeking to take full advantage of the region’s sunshine. Rather than committing to the creation of a larger house, the clients instead opted for an additional structure, as they wanted to experience the residence’s outdoor areas. The brief then outlined crafting a series of outdoor spaces that would capture the essence of the region and, most importantly, would celebrate a more communal living arrangement that could be shared alongside family and friends.
Lucas & Lucas were integral to the project, allowing for a completely holistic approach to the creation of each outdoor living space. Both Lucas & Lucas and Malcolm Davis Architecture designed an outdoor experience that aligned with the original home. The new works feature a guest house addition, outdoor kitchen and living areas, as well as undercover parking. A courtyard space now also sits between the existing structure and the new, strengthening the relationship between the two. The new build similarly provides far more space for the home, ultimately encouraging moments of socialising and entertainment. The structure also aligns with the adjacent pool area, which originally did not have any relationship to the existing home. Now, the three are able to speak to one another in harmony.
Inspired by local barns, yet executed with a contemporary twist, the addition features a gabled roof that blends seamlessly with nearby structures. Its exposed steel frame contrasts beautifully with locally harvested redwood timber, paying homage to the town’s history and fostering a connection with neighbouring homes. Skylights flood the covered outdoor areas with natural light, while copper accents in the kitchen’s custom barbecue hood and gabled roof echo the warmth of the timber. This warmness is then balanced by concrete flooring, which grounds the outdoor spaces and reinforces their purpose.
Malcolm Davis Architecture seamlessly integrates the old with the new. As a result, Wine Country Barn emerges as a striking addition that harmonises with its surroundings.
