Woollahra Cottage by Molnar Architects
In the leafy enclaves of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, Woollahra Cottage emerges as a nuanced study in architectural reinvention.
Molnar Architects crafted a delicate interplay of astute spatial configuration and natural materials, resulting in a dwelling that simultaneously exudes intimacy and expansiveness. This considered approach yields a residence that pays homage to historical roots while seamlessly accommodating the rhythms of contemporary family life.
The architecture takes advantage of the gentle slope across the site, with spaces stepping down and opening in a progression towards rear garden spaces. Utilising this sectional design methodology maintains ceiling heights from the original cottage while creating a sense of expansion, culminating in additional generous volumes that connect seamlessly with the outdoors. The floor plan is conceived to create interlocking spaces, each considered unique and crafted to have its own distinct character while sharing elements with adjacent areas. This interlocking design allows the house to feel larger than its footprint suggests.
Perched overlooking the dining area, the study maintains privacy while remaining connected to the heart of the home, utilising the existing cottage footprint. Partial height sandstone walls flow from the study to encircle the dining area, offering a cosy nook. A stone fireplace anchors the living space, providing a focal point for gatherings, while large sliding doors disappear into cavities, blurring the boundary between inside and out. Upstairs, two bedrooms with ensuites offer private retreats, while a bespoke bunk room maximises space. The upper level is flooded with natural light via a large operable skylight, serving the additional practical purpose of acting as a thermal chimney.
At the heart of this project lies a deep appreciation for natural materials, seamlessly linking interior and exterior palettes.
At the heart of this project lies a deep appreciation for natural materials, seamlessly linking interior and exterior palettes. The existing sandstone, a hallmark of Sydney’s architectural heritage, reached from the outside in. This robust foundation is softened by the warmth of timber ceilings and floors, creating continuity and cohesive texture throughout. Employing a restrained and purposeful approach to materiality sees marble and joinery finishes provide a neutral canvas for furniture and artwork. The palette allows the home to evolve with its inhabitants, accommodating changing tastes and styles.
The success of Woollahra Cottage lies in a close collaboration between Molnar Architects and the client. The result is a home that feels deeply personal, with every surface and space considered, interrogated and refined in a way that is both timeless and contemporary.
