Combining clean lines with luxurious materials, Aperture embodies a passion for art, travel and high-end hotels. Designed by APS Design, the apartment redefines the typical Sydney dwelling with its innovative approach to space.

Located in Potts Point, one of Sydney’s oldest suburbs, Aperture offers breathtaking views that stretch from Luna Park to North Head. The design brief incorporates the area’s rich history with the impressive vista to create a contemporary home that is reminiscent of the clients’ favourite hotels. The apartment is designed with social gatherings in mind, featuring a layout that leads occupants toward floor-to-ceiling windows, ensuring unobstructed views of the city. Discreet lighting, custom, recessed sprinklers and plaster-set speakers are thoughtfully added to maintain an open, uninterrupted focus on the scenery. Natural light flows through several openings, evenly illuminating the home.

Aperture embodies the value of restraint in design. “In reimagining the main suite, we embraced a concept of openness that challenges conventional Sydney renovations,” says Ellie Sutton, senior interior designer at APS Design. “By removing walls, we transformed three separate rooms into an expansive retreat that captures our clients’ passion for luxury hotels.” One bedroom now serves as an ensuite, while another has been transformed into a lavish, open wardrobe featuring bespoke brass and glass details. This new spatial arrangement reveals previously hidden views of Sydney Harbour Bridge, strengthening the relationship between the home and its setting.

Stylistically, Aperture celebrates both the opulence of Art Deco – found in many historic buildings in Potts Point – and the minimalism favoured by premium hotels. Materials like Calacatta marble, Chambord grey limestone, bronze and textured Venetian plaster enhance the apartment’s clean lines, deepening its sense of luxury. “The kitchen,” says Diane Fernandes, design director at APS Design, “epitomises the project’s focus on form and materiality, featuring a striking oversized island bench with curved Calacatta marble detailing and seamlessly integrated stone cupboards.” The introduction of Chambord grey limestone and matte grey joinery is equally important, drawing inspiration from the grey navy ships visible to the east of the apartment and the one-of-a-kind marble slabs supplied by SBN Stone. “These materials not only complement our design but also forge a connection between the interior and the harbour beyond,” says Fernandes.

Commissioned artworks by Vicki Lee beautifully convey the core ideas of Aperture. One piece is a diptych that captures the movement of the harbour, while another is an oversized white canvas showcasing Lee’s signature paint application, celebrating the vibrancy of the city. By anchoring the home with these artworks, APS Design champions the concepts of spatial generosity, aesthetic refinement and luxurious living in Sydney.
