In the competitive landscape of Sydney brunching and lunching, Superfreak stands apart with YSG’s bold and layered design centred around the concept of a communal sunken lounge.

If you were to pick just one piece that symbolises the distinctive, personality-packed fun that is Superfreak, it would have to be the Gentiana lamp from lauded United States gallery The Future Perfect next to the entryway coffee machine. Crafted by artist Autumn Casey, the light’s trippy take on a traditional Tiffany lamp is emblematic of a few details in this cafe, as well as the approach of interior design firm YSG. The intricate detailing nods to the repeated pattern of sweet window curtains custom printed by Think Positive, while the green facets link to the many shades of green throughout the diminutive eatery. These varying hues feature throughout; the facade, awash in a distinctive eucalypt, stands out on the industrial and residential fringe of Sydney’s Marrickville, while inside, the dramatic high-gloss forest shade on the ceiling befits the nature of the Inner West’s urban jungle sprawl.

An enticing shag-pile semi-enclosed banquette seat forms the main dining zone, with expanses of maple joinery by Das Joinery and vintage solid timber chairs from 1stDibs. These variations of delicious butterscotch, caramel and chocolate brown hues continue to the cork floor underfoot, while a soft butter yellow shade is splashed across the back wall, made sunnier with lighting in the forms of an angular wall lamp by Olivia Bossy and saucer- shaped rice paper lanterns.

The kitchen does not miss out on this nostalgia- tinged brand of retro fun, with an abstract leafy garden landscape mural by Creative Finish wrapping across concealed storage and refrigeration, and perhaps the most covetable kitsch piece in Superfreak: a snowpea-laden ceramic vase. This attention to detail keeps the eye intrigued, with custom cushions crafted from pre-loved Japanese fabrics from Chee Soon & Fitzgerald and the fan-shaped Destino hanging artwork by Venezuelan artist Nadia Hernández from Station Gallery, which is perhaps a marker for Superfreak’s mastering of its own destiny – at the very least, in the design stakes.
