In Partnership with Laminex

Leading Australian designer Adam Goodrum joins forces with Laminex to celebrate the iconic brand’s 90th birthday by reimagining an iconic 1930s table for the 21st century.

It’s been 90 years since Laminex was founded in a tin shed in suburban Melbourne, producing the decorative laminates that have since become ubiquitous across the country. To mark this momentous milestone, the company has teamed up with another Australian design doyen: celebrated industrial and furniture designer Adam Goodrum. The fruit of this new partnership is a reimagination of an iconic Laminex 1930s table, a stalwart in Australian kitchens for decades.

Goodrum’s design, known as the Echo Table, captures the essence of Laminex’s original while also paying tribute to 1920s Art Deco-style envelope tables. It’s imbued with the designer’s signature bold, geometric shapes and reflects his clever use of colour. “The gorgeous tones of the Laminex 23/24 Colour Collection, paired with Adam’s ability to combine practicality with aesthetics, has brought to life an incredibly playful and striking piece,” says Rachel Oakley, Laminex’s head of marketing.

Ten months in the making, the expandable table acts as a love letter to Australia by using decors from Laminex’s 23/24 Colour Collection that have been inspired by the country’s landscape: a warm yellow (Coastal Sunrise), a grey-green (Gumnut), muted brown (Outback Clay) and soft blue (Macedon Mist). Each colour is carefully worked into the table via geometric shapes to create a unique, characterful finish. “The extensive range of laminates within the Laminex Colour Collection allowed me to design the table with a reserved colour scheme,” says Goodrum. “But once it is opened up, the table transforms into a vibrant display of warm tones that beautifully reflect the Australian landscape.”

“The table is more than just a surface for meals – it’s a versatile hub for dining, working and entertaining.”

Key to the table’s design are the needs of contemporary households. “The table is more than just a surface for meals – it’s a versatile hub for dining, working and entertaining,” says Goodrum. Expandable leaves can open and close to accommodate large and small gatherings. This modularity works hard to cater to everything from big family meals to working from home and on-the-run breakfasts. It reflects the versatility of the Laminex brand itself, which has expanded over the years to encompass joinery systems, technologically advanced laminates, wall panelling, acrylic surfaces and more.

The collaboration with Goodrum is a continuation of Laminex’s partnerships with the most influential names in Australian design, including Kennedy Nolan, YSG Studio and Studio Doherty. These alliances demonstrate the iconic brand’s dedication to brilliant design and its support of the country’s design industry.
