La Marzocco’s Design-Forward Approach
La Marzocco goes beyond handcrafting espresso machines that produce brilliant coffee – it works with leading design firms to create bespoke solutions for hospitality and residential spaces.
Since its founding in Florence, Italy, in 1927, La Marzocco has developed a reputation for handcrafting the world’s most trusted coffee machines. While the company’s machines are ubiquitous in hospitality venues, they’re increasingly being spotted in high-end residential and commercial spaces, thanks to close partnerships with Australian architecture and design practices such as Melbourne’s In Addition. In these projects, La Marzocco’s machines have not only been installed for their functionality but are considered design objects and taste signifiers in their own right.
The company’s work outside the hospitality realm echoes a trend seen across the world, as specialty coffee becomes a mainstay in both commercial and residential spaces. The brand provides a bespoke service, ensuring each coffee machine slots in seamlessly to a project’s allotted footprint. Every product is carefully chosen and adapted to hit its mark, whether the machine is from La Marzocco’s Home or Commercial collections or the pioneering under-counter Modbar.
The Italian brand was brought on board by In Addition for Molli, a sleek bistro and bar in Abbotsford, Melbourne, opened by cafe culture trailblazer Nathan Toleman. Like the venue itself, the Linea Classic S espresso machine has a contemporary and minimalist aesthetic, helping it flawlessly slot into its surrounds. Adjacent sister venue Little Molli had its own specific requirements: its design is a tribute to classic coffee houses. That retro aesthetic is brilliantly offset by the GB5 X espresso machine, an ultra-stylish piece with premium functionality.
In Addition has also worked with La Marzocco to mastermind the soon-to-open Sydney outpost of internationally renowned croissanterie Lune. As a declaration of the bakery’s dedication to outstanding coffee, Lune’s La Marzocco espresso machine will sit front-of-house; La Marzocco and In Addition are working together to select and tailor a machine that will bolster Lune’s signature precision-focused aesthetic.
The company’s versatility in the residential realm will also take full flight in mid-2025 with the completion of two In Addition projects in Melbourne’s Malvern and Sydney’s Balgowlah Heights. At the heart of each home sits a La Marzocco coffee machine, seamlessly integrated within the finishes palette of each space. The small footprint, exquisite build quality and variety of colour options enable the machine to be a highlight of the interiors.
In Addition’s work with La Marzocco even extends to its own headquarters, which boasts a Linea Mini machine and a Pico grinder. The pair perfectly suit the small footprint and slick aesthetic of the design studio’s in-house coffee bar – and ultimately serve as a statement of the A&D world’s respect for this heritage brand.
