MPavilion launches Season 11
A free art, design and performance program, MPavilion Season 11 will be held at Tadao Ando’s award-winning structure in Melbourne from November 21 2024 to March 22 2025.
A flagship initiative of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, MPavilion is Australia’s leading architecture commission. This summer, MPavilion Season 11 will offer an innovative program combining art, design, music, performance and ideas for design lovers and the general public alike. The series of events have been co-curated with the newly formed Curatorial Collective, a cross-disciplinary group of eight creative practitioners based in Melbourne.
There will be three key series throughout the program. The first is Home Ground, which explores ideas of belonging, safety and connection to Country, with art experiences, workshops and discussions, while Building Blocks offers activities for families over the school holiday period, headlined by Boxwars who are known for their inventive cardboard-based art creations. Meanwhile, Every Living Thing will feature an installation by Reef Design Lab, showcasing reef restoration techniques and examining the relationship with the non-human.
The program will also feature other events, with architecture highlights including BLAKitecture: HOME, where Bradley Kerr and the creative directors of the Venice Architecture Biennale‘s Australian Pavilion will host a talk exploring Indigenous knowledge systems and architectural innovation. Design Odyssey: The 15 Minute Walk will see the real-life testing of an urban-planning concept where most of one’s daily needs can be reached within a 15-minute walk.
After the live music and art taking place on the opening night, other key highlights include Dusk til Dark, an experimental music program featuring intimate performances by Melbourne electronic and improvisational musicians such as Corin Ileto, The Night Terrors, Fia Fiell, Xani Kolac, Tilman Robinson and more. Meanwhile, A Very Koori Pool Party will showcase performances from Wiradjuri dancer and performance-maker Joel Bray and fellow Koori dancers Zoe Brown-Holten and Jackie Sheppard, inspired by early modern queer photography and ancient Corroboree practices.
“In one short year, the pavilion has become a beloved landmark for Melburnians and visitors alike – a place to gather, unwind, be inspired and connect with the natural world,” says Naomi Milgrom, founder of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation and commissioner of the MPavilion initiative. “MPavilion’s 11th season builds on the first decade of MPavilion, and I’m excited to see the gardens activated again this summer and to experience the broad array of activities that take the Ando pavilion as the inspiration and springboard for new ideas and collective creativity.”
MPavilion Season 11 is an exciting event in the Australian design calendar, inviting all to experience art, design and architecture in new ways.
