Stucco House by InForm
Characterised by formal simplicity and a monochromatic palette, Stucco House by InForm sits subtly yet confidently in Melbourne’s Beaumaris, giving little away at first glance.
Stucco House by InForm embodies a design philosophy of formal simplicity, refined materiality and thoughtful detailing. Situated on a gently sloping, tree-lined street in the bayside suburb of Beaumaris, the home presents a quiet yet confident presence. Its simple, discreet stucco facade belies the rich material palette and dramatic spatial experience within, creating a striking contrast between exterior restraint and interior dynamism.
This interplay between solidity and texture defines the home’s exterior. Robust stucco walls are complemented by delicate black metal accents – pergolas, window frames and louvres – that provide both visual refinement and practical solar protection. Inside, the material palette is grounded in polished concrete floors with marble accents, introducing a layer of subtle luxury. The result is a timeless composition that is both enduring and elegant, reinforcing InForm’s commitment to architecturally considered homes of lasting quality.
The home’s layout has two distinct wings, enhancing both functionality and privacy. The larger, double-storey western wing extends the length of the block, accommodating the main bedroom suite, gym and primary living areas, which flow into a generous outdoor entertaining space and pool. Upstairs, three children’s bedrooms and a rumpus room enjoy a north-facing outlook over the street. The smaller, single-storey eastern wing houses the garage, a study and a secluded lounge room oriented towards a private courtyard.
As one moves through the residence, the initial sense of restraint gives way to a dynamic spatial experience. A dramatic double-height hallway framed by soaring stucco walls leads to expansive north-facing glass, maximising natural light and creating a sense of openness. This progression of spaces reflects InForm’s approach to personalised, intelligent design. “Stucco House exemplifies InForm’s design philosophy, which includes simple form-making, a refined material palette and well-considered, robust detailing,” says Simon Perkins of Pleysier Perkins, the architecture and interiors practice that collaborates with InForm on its homes.
Balancing aesthetics with functionality, InForm’s design ensures that Stucco House responds seamlessly to its occupants’ evolving needs. Communal areas are strategically centred around the kitchen and loggia, fostering effortless indoor-outdoor living, while private spaces offer moments of solitude. “The public entertaining areas flow from the front entry, without any hint of all the other private amenities the home offers,” Perkins says.
Sustainability is embedded in the home’s design, enhancing longevity. Despite the site’s challenging orientation, the home optimises passive solar gain with high glazing and strategically positioned voids that capture sunlight from the north and west. External louvre screens mitigate summer heat, particularly on the west-facing side, while a steel-framed pergola provides additional shading for both the outdoor living areas and interiors. This interplay of solid, operable and open roofs ensures the home remains comfortable throughout the year while maintaining a strong connection to its surroundings.
By carefully balancing materiality, spatial experience, and environmental considerations, Stucco House stands as a testament to InForm’s expertise in delivering architecturally designed homes that are both functional and enduring. More than just a striking addition to the streetscape, the home embodies a philosophy of thoughtful, long-term design.
