Articolo Studios marks its 10th year with a new Melbourne showroom that provides an elevated touchpoint to experience the brand’s sculptural lighting and furniture.

This year, Melbourne lighting and furniture designer Articolo Studios celebrated its 10th anniversary with something special: the launch of a flagship Melbourne showroom. The new outpost – a creative alliance with long-time collaborator Studio Goss – signals a defining milestone for the company, founded by Nicci Kavals in 2015. It provides designers and customers with an elevated touchpoint to experience the brand’s sculptural lighting and furniture up-close – a space where materiality, engineering and ambience merge, perfectly embodying the Articolo ethos.

The mesmeric environment is reminiscent of a candlelit concert – an interplay of light, texture and atmosphere that draws visitors into Articolo’s quietly luminous world.

As Kavals explains, the showroom is emblematic of the studio’s evolution. “Celebrating our 10th year gives us a sense of maturity, confidence and conviction in who we are and where we are headed,” she says. “The foundations are laid, and we are now at the starting gates, ready to unfold the greater vision. We see this as just the beginning of an enduring brand, one that will outlive its founders.”

For Kavals and David Goss, founder of Studio Goss, it was important that the showroom was rooted in restraint, a deliberately pared-back canvas that would allow the lighting and furniture to take pride of place. Composed of a sequence of variously sized volumes, the space is a gentle melange of oak flooring, travertine platforms and hand-rubbed brass accents. The resulting calm cedes the spotlight to the sculptural objects on display, while skylights invite in light, allowing every surface, pattern and colour to shine both singly and as part of the larger whole. “From the nuance of mouth-blown glass to the forming of precious metals into three dimensions, each piece reveals – and revels in – the unique imprint of the maker’s hand.”

Though defined by angular volumes, the showroom possesses an earthy quality, an approach that reflects the nature of the objects it houses: all of Articolo Studio’s lighting features brass as a base metal, with some pieces finished in bronze. The space reflects the studio’s focus on the inherent beauty of the materials featured in its ranges. “We create lighting and a complement of sculptural furniture pieces that embrace both natural and machined materials – unique objects designed to layer the home,” says Kavals. “Our products also celebrate the artistry of transforming materials into objects of beauty. From the nuance of mouth-blown glass to the forming of precious metals into three dimensions, each piece reveals – and revels in – the unique imprint of the maker’s hand: an echo of humanity that cannot be replicated in mass production.”

The showroom isn’t the only outward marker of the brand’s 10th year. Articolo has also released three new ranges to mark the milestone – Swivel, Cubo and Saddle. The Swivel collection, comprising pendants and wall sconces, pivots at 15-degree intervals in a 360-degree, carousel-like system, moving gracefully to where light is needed most. The cylindrical diffuser, crafted from European glass, is a masterpiece in itself, casting delicate haloes that enhance a room’s atmosphere with quiet elegance.

The Saddle range reflects the company’s growth from bespoke lighting studio to furniture atelier.

Cubo is as playful as it is poetic, demonstrating how glass can also masquerade in opacity. With each glass block made by pouring molten glass into a handmade wooden mould, its compact geometry feels both architectural and emotive, with softened edges and a clouded translucence that evokes the intimacy of a candle glowing behind frosted glass. Meanwhile, the Saddle range – featuring an ottoman and armchair with walnut legs and cushions suspended in leather slings – reflects the company’s growth from bespoke lighting studio to furniture atelier.

As it steps into its second decade, Articolo Studios continues to blur the line between art, design and craftsmanship, elements that its new Melbourne showroom displays to perfection.
