Located in Laurel Canyon, an historic neighbourhood in the Hollywood Hills, And 2001 contributes to the local abundance of modernist architecture. Originally built in the 1950s or ‘60s, the existing house was renovated in the ‘80s and ‘90s, emerging as a confused expression of popular design styles. “The project brief required a big overhaul,” says Annie Ritz, co-founder of And And And Studio. “We added a new children’s floor above, reconfigured the entry and living room and expanded the kitchen. From the outside, there’s only a hint of the new work with the top of the 16-foot stair shaft and the circular cut-out for the kitchen-garden. Inside, the old and new spaces flow seamlessly.” Of the original features, the most inviting are enhanced through related forms and materials, while the remainder are reimagined or removed according to the client’s taste. “As a larger principle in our studio, each project is unique and the client brings a lot to that,” says Ritz. “And 2001 is designed to feel relaxed and effortless but also inspiring, filled with elements that encourage creativity.”

And And And Studio honours the modernist tradition throughout, showcasing terrazzo, oak and linoleum as well as brass, red lacquer and Rojo Alicante marble.

The project begins with a tree-shaded driveway leading to the main entry. Storage units clear the space around the staircase, which connects to the new children’s floor. “It’s always a sensitive topic: How do you put a second storey on a one-storey mid-century house?” says Daniel Rabin, co-founder of And And And Studio. “We’ve come across this situation many times, so for this project, the second storey is set back from the original structure and there is a tall, dramatic volume that the children pass through on their route upstairs. In this way, the design fosters the curiosity that we like to promote in all our projects.” As the house is configured in an L shape, most of the ground floor is occupied by the central living area. A dining room and bar follow, behind which lies the tranquil primary suite. Cream-painted walls with a yellow undertone complement the materials while establishing the warmth for which the studio is renowned.

Testifying to the collaboration of client and designer, And 2001 presents the modernist style through a rich, personal lens. With a forward-thinking outcome, And And And suggests the meeting point between architectural history and the colours and forms of today.
