Founded in 1986 by Eli and Nurit Tal and their son Yosi, Designer Rugs began with a simple belief: that rugs could be more than mere floor coverings. What the Tals envisioned were pieces that could be artisanal, expressive design elements, imparting luxury underfoot through bold colour, considered texture and timeless intent. Beautiful, yes, but backed by a commitment to quality, integrity and durability.

“Over four decades, we have become synonymous with bespoke, made-to-order creations.”

It was a steep learning curve in the beginning. “There was not a rug industry in Australia then,” recalls Yosi Tal, now the company’s managing director, “so all the machinery and anything we used we had to create or import. Everything had to be built from the ground up.”

The company’s in-house design team form the backbone of Designer Rugs’ success, creating timeless collections marked by thoughtful detail, bold patterning and enduring materiality. Like the Lake Silva range, where natural forms meet abstract elegance, and Carnival, a celebration of colour and texture. The team specialise in custom pieces, working with individual spaces, clients’ visions and designers’ concepts. “Over four decades, we have become synonymous with bespoke, made-to-order creations,” Tal says.

The first collection, created with an artist and sculptor, set the tone for decades of partnerships with leading designers and architects.

Collaboration has been central to Designer Rugs’ identity, too. Its first collection, created with an artist and sculptor, set the tone for decades of partnerships with leading designers and architects including Greg Natale, Catherine Martin, Hare + Klein and Silvana Azzi Heras. Their hand-tufted, hand-knotted and meticulously detailed pieces beautifully reflect the brand’s aesthetic. Natale’s Rozzo rug – hand-knotted with Tibetan wool and made in Nepal – draws inspiration from carved concrete panels and the geometry of mid-century brutalism. The wool-and-bamboo-silk Paloma rug from the Gardens of Andalucia range with House of Heras is an homage to the Spanish sun, while Hare + Klein’s Favo brings a burnished, honeyed essence in wool, hemp and silk.

“These rugs all reflect our respect for traditional techniques and premium materiality, paired with contemporary design sensibilities and a commitment to tailored solutions,” Tal says.

“I am very proud we are still the same company that set out on its journey 40 years ago.”

Designer Rugs offers an extensive range of Axminster wool carpet, a machine-woven product known for its durability and complex patterns. Made from high-quality yarns, the carpets are plush and textural underfoot, with a broad colour range to suit any interior style.

With new collections, an ever-deepening commitment to sustainability and an expanding global presence, Designer Rugs is looking to the future while embracing its storied legacy. “I am very proud we are still the same company that set out on its journey 40 years ago,” Tal says. “We care very much about what we do, especially what we do for our clients.”
