Combining the past and the present – The Spanish Mission House project by Pete Kennon of KENNON.STUDIO transforms a Spanish style home through the application of 21st Century design.

Through the clever design of Pete Kennon and the innovative styling of Manuela Millan of Meanwhile In Melbourne, this residential home has been transformed in a way that amplifies the traditionalist charms of the original property. From the onset one is immediately drawn to the eclectic combination of modern art work and mid century architecture – proving that differing styles can coexist in this modern world.

The brief was simple in demand yet complex in execution. Pete was tasked with creating a home that would become a true reflection of the clients lifestyle and act as testimony to a bygone architectural era, whilst establishing a unique identity for the space. The end result surpassed the expectations of not only the client, but the architect as well.

The Spanish Mission House by KENNON.STUDIO has been transformed in a way that amplifies the traditionalist charms of the original property.

Essentially the renovation can be considered a combination of new age contemporary abstraction and historical fiction, the end result making a powerful statement about hollistic design outcomes. An interesting side narrative emerged concerning Pete and his long-term friendship with the client making this a personal project on many levels.

First constructed in the 1900s, Pete and his team saw the dilapidated nature of the home as an opportunity rather than an obstacle to completely transform the space without any detrimental effects to the historical architecture. Utilising all elements of colonial Californian architecture the design generates a bright exterior that clashes brilliantly with the moody interiors.

The end result surpassed the expectations of not only the client, but the architect as well.

Minimalist wall spaces created a blank canvas for the client’s impressive collection of artwork. Complementing the colourless backdrop to create an atmosphere that feels fluid and spacious, KENNON.STUDIO also included a study with colourful and thoughtful paintings from the client’s portfolio. The application of New Volumes pieces by Artedomus add a further element of contemporary elegance to the space.

The Spanish Mission House by KENNON.STUDIO is a truly curious creation. Once through the looking glass and across the threshold of the traditionalist exterior one is immediately immersed in a contrasting world a modern design and artwork. Ultimately the design team have created a home that truly reflects the clients personality whilst paying tribute to the historical nature of the space – a truly remarkable achievement.
