For A Better Future – Ferrars & York by HIP V. HYPE
Sustainable and innovative design is central to the ethos of every HIP V. HYPE development, and its latest project Ferrars & York is no exception.
Fresh off collaborating on the Nightingale 2.0 project, HIP V. HYPE worked with Six Degrees Architects to bring Ferrars & York to life. The development features 22 carbon-neutral apartments located less than 100 metres from the South Melbourne Market. Powered by 100% renewable energy and adopting best practice in climate resilient design and construction, HIP V. HYPE director Liam Wallis says that the experience working on Nightingale 2.0 proved integral to bringing Ferrars & York together. “Because the site dimensions and building typology of Nightingale 2.0 worked so well, we set out to find other sites with similar attributes,” Liam explains. “The site for Ferrars & York came up and its location adjacent to light rail just 100m from the South Melbourne Market was a no- brainer.”
The apartments are a mixture of one, two and three-bedroom properties, with the building targeting an 8-star energy rating. A dual east-west aspect promotes cross ventilation and solar penetration, making heating and cooling the apartments more affordable and energy efficient. Open walkways further promote airflow, whilst consideration has even been given to the choice of appliances. HIP V. HYPE chose to use VZUG appliances in the kitchens throughout, partly for their commitment to being carbon neutral by 2020. Double glazed window and shared solar panels on the roof further reinforce the energy saving attributes at a property-level.
Set over six stories, the building places a large emphasis on community, in addition to its sustainability credentials. A shared rooftop garden space with both fireplace and BBQ facilities is intended to encourage quality interactions and a sense of belonging amongst neighbours. Additionally, there are three ground-floor commercial retail spaces, and HIP V. HYPE also intends to open a new Collective space on site. The Collective series of shared working spaces have allowed HIP V. HYPE to link with sustainably-minded businesses in the past, and Liam is mindful of the collaborative potential in offering such a network opportunity.
Through genuine collaboration, Ferrars & York is a project that seeks a balance between quality, sustainability and durability. As Liam explains, “in order to design something great, I think you have to have a really strong understanding of how it’s put together. It’s not enough to just design a pretty form.” This notion speaks to the heart of the sustainable endeavour of HIP V. HYPE’s approach, amongst which Ferrars & York now proudly sits.
