320 Rokeby by Donaldson Boshard and Rezen Studio
Newly crafted in Subiaco, Western Australia, 320 Rokeby champions a hospitable approach to workplace architecture. The boutique agency headquarters, designed by Donaldson Boshard in collaboration with Rezen Studio, is distinguished by its curvaceous façade and warm interiority, forming a compelling alternative to the typical corporate offering.
Located approximately three kilometres from the Perth CBD, 320 Rokeby is immersed in an urban village environment. The unique design of the office embraces both the vibrant local community and the architectural DNA of Donaldson Boshard, whose buildings foster a sense of place and are activated by people. While emphasising spatial requirements – including work zones, bathrooms and a food preparation area – the project brief detailed a workplace with a warm and invitational character, in contrast to the sterility of a standard office. With architecture and interior design integrated and appropriately scaled, the experience of 320 Rokeby evokes the comfort of a residential building, affirming the belief that workplaces can positively contribute to personal wellbeing.
The project begins with a bold, welcoming facade. Floor-to-ceiling windows are framed by a dramatic stone curve that, in addition to pale brickwork, softens the external expression. The curve also alters the visual scale of the building so that it appears less imposing and better related to the size of an average house. Black accents on the windows enhance the warmth of the lighting within. Upon entry, a generous amount of floor space is dedicated to creating a clear path to the stairs, scullery, washroom, workspace and street-facing boardroom. The second level supports another washroom and workspace, as well as a utility room and a boardroom opening to a spacious balcony.
Underpinned by wabi-sabi design principles, which involve the appreciation of the imperfect and transient, 320 Rokeby is full of natural materials. Sustainably sourced timber linings are used extensively, drawing attention to the barrel-vault ceiling and enhancing the airy quality of the interior, while the external brickwork is continued indoors. Combined with an open floor plan, the consistency of the architectural details fosters a calming work environment. To reinforce the residential feeling of the space, soft furnishings are complemented by integrated lighting, plants and artwork. Sheer drapery diffuses natural light and balances the hardness of the built envelope.

Utilising design features typically associated with residential spaces, 320 Rokeby offers a fresh interpretation of a healthy business environment. With the support of Rezen Studio, Donaldson Boshard successfully connects architecture and interior design to create a warm and inviting workplace.
