A Fusing of Eras – House of Billie by Georgie Shepherd Interior Design
Extending and altering an existing bungalow in leafy suburban Adelaide, House of Billie is the fusing of eras and a clever play on space, efficiency and select materiality. Georgie Shepherd Interior Design brings a considered and muted palette to carefully craft the new works, integrating refined detail and a sense of prolonged purpose and relevance.
House of Billie takes it namesake from its youngest and furriest occupant, the family’s cavoodle pup. As both an extension and alteration, the project scope involves the reworking of the rear of the existing home, expanding into the yard and creating a meaningful and connected dining and kitchen space, all in support of one another. A separate self-contained dwelling sits along the rear boundary as an additional living space and is connected through gestural pavers in the landscape. Georgie Shepherd Interior Design combines a considered and nuanced approach that sees refined details injected based on their current relevance and a resounding appropriateness to the era of the original home. The new then bridges with the old in a deliberate, measured manner.
‘The new interventions are the result of a close collaboration with Beach DC Design Studio and were built by Little Build Co. Working with the original scale of the home, the addition is conceived under a similar slightness and is an exercise in precision and efficiency. The choice of materiality and overall tone adds to the successful cohesion of the space and the expanded feeling conjured. Subtle elements such as flooring finish sees the dining shift into the kitchen space, omitting the need for more traditional zoning elements. The overall approach is one grounded on simplicity and ensures restraint enables the brief to be fulfilled and an expanded sense of internal volume created.
The palette sees complementary neutrals come together with warming terracotta and earth tones, which are then cooled by a series of greys and natural elements. Brass tapware and stone inject both a sense of luxury and heighten the residential experience and reference a more classical and heritage approach, fusing the old with the new. An integral element ensuring the home has longevity is the inclusion of integrated storage, not solely to support amenity but to also aid in reinforcing the simplicity of each of the spaces.
House of Billie is the thoughtful addition that extends the heritage of the home through a modern lens. Georgie Shepherd Interior Design has combined considered elements that bring together craft with the contemporary to curate a prolonged and relevant family home.
