Abode: A Unique Legacy
A new art-filled Melbourne home is the brilliant canvas for local legacy brand Abode’s custom bedding products, handcrafted from quality fabrics sourced from Italy.
Since 1991, family-owned textiles company and retailer Abode has been handcrafting premium bed linen and other lifestyle products in Melbourne. The Abode story began in the early 1900s, when the Adair family opened Adairs, a humble haberdashery on Melbourne’s Chapel Street that’s since become a household name across Australia. After parting ways with the Adairs brand, the family launched Abode to elevate its mission of creating luxury linen products for the home. For more than 30 years, the Adair family has maintained a dedication to quality that extends beyond the retail sphere to sourcing quality fabrics from Milan and weaving them into premium bedding in their Camberwell warehouse, directly behind their showroom.
Beyond its retail trade, Abode offers a range of bespoke options for designers and homeowners looking to ensure their projects are distinctive and personalised. Sizing, finishes and trims can all be customised to suit individual spaces, offering enormous flexibility and allowing designers and homeowners to select products that perfectly suit their idiosyncratic needs.
The possibilities open to Abode customers are crystallised in the bespoke bedding commissioned by Melbourne couple Gail and John, who worked with interior stylist Janine Vasta on their art-filled inner-Melbourne home. Together, the trio commissioned Abode to handcraft bespoke bed linen that would express the couple’s love of arts and textiles, and build upon the stately design features found throughout their residence. The result? A unique set of bed linens for each bedroom, crafted in rich hues from quality textiles that complement the home’s carefully considered interiors.
To bring the project to life, Abode opened its collection of Italian-milled fabrics in a huge array of colours and fabrics to Janine, Gail and John, who selected textured linen designs to harmonise with the home’s design, and opted for an opulent sateen finish for comforting sleep. The fabrics were ordered directly from Abode’s suppliers in Milan, which shipped the textiles to Melbourne. Once the textiles arrived at Abode’s Camberwell headquarters, each piece was custom-tailored and sewn, resulting in an impactful custom end product.
Abode works closely with designers and customers to tailor pieces by hand to meet individual specifications, from colour to sizing and fabrics, all the way down to specific threads. Once the bespoke order is complete, Abode styles and installs the bedding to harmonise with the customer’s vision and overall design ethos. Abode’s dedicated team ensures quality in every element, overseeing the entire process from ideation to execution and installation – just one aspect that makes its product unique in the Australian market. Indeed, no other Australian textiles and bedding company offers this level of customisation.
