Activision Blizzard SHG by Studio Tate
Activision Blizzard, a global gaming powerhouse, has unveiled its new Activision Blizzard SHG workspace in Melbourne. Crafted by Studio Tate, the design honours the nostalgic charm of retro computer games while fostering a refined and casual work environment.
Anita Zampichelli, associate director at Studio Tate, highlights the inspiration behind the project, citing a fondness for the 1970s and ’80swhen gaming consoles first emerged. “This project reimagines workplace design,” she says, “especially preconceived ideas of how a tech business presents, both aesthetically and emotionally.” This sentiment is clear upon entering the office space, where flecked terrazzo-style vinyl flooring and a gleaming stainless-steel reception desk, with a teal finish underneath, set the tone for a journey into the past with a futuristic twist.
The design seamlessly blends elements of nostalgia with contemporary refinement. Walnut timber-lined seating banquettes upholstered in burgundy leather offer a cosy contrast to the sleek tech-inspired aesthetic. This fusion creates an inviting atmosphere that prioritises comfort and openness, reflecting the feedback gathered from the team to enhance their workday experience. “Overwhelmingly, the feedback indicated a desire for comfort, something familiar – a space that is approachable,” says Zampichelli.
Coloured vinyl flooring continues as one moves through the space, where workstations have been kept to four large open-plan areas, interspersed with meeting rooms and a dedicated games room pod. The layout encourages collaboration and creativity, and a large breakout area with bleacher-style seating accommodates team meetings and social gatherings for up to 110 people.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the design embodies the company ethos of ‘You gotta have fun to make fun’.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the design embodies the company ethos of ‘You gotta have fun to make fun’. The workspace serves as a form of escapism, allowing employees to immerse themselves in a vibrant and engaging environment that supports productivity. “What makes this project unique is that it merges retro and tech, is not too serious and is colourful but not bold,” says Zampichelli.
The considered selection of materials and finishes ensures longevity. By opting for timeless design elements, Studio Tate has created a space that will remain inspiring for years to come. As Zampichelli emphasises, sustainability is not just about environmental impact but also about creating spaces that stand the test of time. “Using quality finishes that will last is key to our studio’s practice,” she says.
The Activision Blizzard SHG space represents a fresh take on workplace design, blending nostalgia with contemporary innovation to create a dynamic and comfortable work environment. It’s a testament to the company’s ability to foster creativity and collaboration. As employees step into this immersive space, they are “transported away from the busyness outside to a state that is relaxed yet focused”, redefining what a tech office can be.
