As its name suggests, Addition by Subtraction emphasises the breathability of interior spaces. The original 1990s Tuscan villa underwent a profound transformation to embrace a modern aesthetic. Inspired by the owners’ love for minimalist styles, particularly Scandinavian and Japanese designs, the renovation prioritised simplicity. This essential foundation gave rise to a new design, one that celebrates a quiet yet impactful atmosphere. The new interior features new spatial arrangements that enhance natural light and create clearer sightlines, while the exterior showcases sleeker visuals with brass rods over the original, heavy steel balustrades. Throughout the home, specific design elements were created with the intention of repurposing existing structures, ensuring that the original concrete framework was preserved and highlighted.

Light plays a vital role in the home, actively engaging with the spaces and creating a sense of softness. A central staircase connects the three storeys, allowing light to flow through a frameless skylight. This vivid illumination complements the home’s materials; smooth plaster reflects light beautifully, while touches of timber add warmth and sophistication, softening the tranquil colour palette. The interior tonality is gentle, reflecting a focus on simple elegance.

Sculptural elements add curated intrigue and are easy to experience. The main living area features a curved fireplace that draws the eye inward and acts as the room’s focal point. The kitchen, which opens to the terrace and garden, is grounded by a naturally shaped island bench that serves as the centrepiece of the space. Additionally, the interior benefits from passive design elements, with modern insulation, double-glazing and updated service systems to support a contemporary lifestyle while allowing for natural cross ventilation through new openings.
