Reimagined from the rear, Alexandria House stands as a symbol of permanence, with elongated vertical gestures spanning two levels, emphasising its overall height.

Lachlan Seegers Architect weaves the existing intricate details of the 1886 terrace home with a contemporary and timeless perspective. While the exterior harmonises with the surrounding architectural style and context, internally, Alexandria House offers a distinct experience. Its linear layout and minimalist design create a calm home, all while discreetly concealing its retreat-like ambience from passers-by. Behind the restored façade, the dwelling extends upwards, leveraging the additional rear space. Strategically placed new openings also flood the interior with natural light, illuminating the spaces within.

Lachlan Seegers Architect preserves the original character of the front of the abode while integrating new modern elements behind deep reveals. Throughout, refined junctions and details accentuate the lines of the new spaces, prioritising simplicity over unnecessary decoration. Honouring the home’s history, the architect oversees the transformation of the facade from disrepair to a design intended to endure for the next century. By replacing sections of the residence that couldn’t be salvaged, the emphasis is on a future-focused approach to form and materials within the existing context.

The original warmth of the brick is reintroduced with earth- and clay-coloured elements, extending from the front door to the open courtyard and adjoining laneway. Contrast with lighter tones defines edges and frames openings, inviting natural light in. The textures and finishes offer richness and depth, balancing smooth and raw surfaces, while various pigments and aggregates, as well as with ironbark and deep burgundy tones, create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow inside, enhancing its visual appeal.

Alexandria House is a celebration of both past and present elements. Lachlan Seegers Architect connects the front and rear aspects of the site while also defining an enduring identity for the home that will remain for years to come.
