A deeply considered renovation of a charming terrace, Arch Nouveau by Studio KaaKi harmonises the heritage of the original building with contemporary details and improved functionality.

Overseeing the reimagination of a 1980s house, the team made minimal interventions while highlighting the original architectural features of vaulted ceilings and sweeping curves. “Our aim was to elevate the existing building with small, thoughtful changes while creating a seamless connection between the interior spaces and the adjoining courtyard garden. The calm palette of natural materials introduces warmth and personality, while bespoke joinery complements the home’s geometries,” says Kristian Kaufmehl, co-founder of Studio KaaKi.

The material palette is grounded in a refined combination of warm timber, sculptural joinery and neutral hues.

The existing facade is therefore retained yet subtly modernised by adding bold and neutral tones. Much of the home’s original layout is also retained. However, space is maximised through innovative joinery and storage. On the main level, communal spaces blend seamlessly in an airy open-plan layout. Meanwhile, steel bi-folding doors encourage a sense of flow between the living area and the leafy garden designed by Even Spaces. In the kitchen, functional additions include a new light-filled butler’s pantry and laundry, adding ease and amenity.

In the kitchen, Taj Mahal and Esmerelda quartzites are balanced with the warmth of oak floors and brass detailing. Grey carpet adds a contemporary edge, while rich terrazzo and deep green hues in the bathroom add a considered moment of visual drama. This thoughtful layering of materials creates a sense of calm and retreat.

Moments of playfulness and sophisticated detailing also appear throughout the home, like the joinery in the children’s bedrooms. Meanwhile, skylights flood the home with natural light, while pendant wall lights by Nau and Coco Flip, sculptural lighting by The Visuals Creative Agency and refined Miele appliances add a layer of luxury to the home’s otherwise pared-back aesthetic.

A timeless home imbued with warmth, Arch Nouveau is an oasis for a young family – a place where they can rest and retreat from the busyness of city life.
