Armytage House by WMK Architecture and Indre
To breathe new life into Armytage House and honour its rich history, both WMK Architecture and Indre have kept its grandeur alive by carefully blending old charm with a cosy, artisanal feel.
Originally belonging to George Armytage, a key figure South Yarra’s heritage landscape, Armytage House has seen various uses over time. Once a school and later a council building, it underwent a restoration by the new owners alongside WMK Architecture and Indre. With a goal for the design to reflect the home’s history and integrate modern touches, the owners truly make the two-storey adobe their own while preserving its inherent charm, even transforming formerly hidden spaces like the kitchen into central gathering spots.
Surrounded by an intricate wrought iron verandah, the structure resembles a living sculpture, showcasing the handmade details of the home. While adhering to Heritage Victoria’s guidelines, skilled, passionate craftspeople were integral to the restoration to ensure elements like Welsh slate and Barrabool stone were revived. This extensive effort has earned the home a spot on the Victorian Heritage Register, highlighting the enduring significance of historic properties.
Throughout the site and across multiple levels, materials with timeless appeal were chosen to reflect both the home’s character and its owners’ personalities. The resulting dwelling blends warmth, texture and tone, complemented by curated artwork, furniture and lighting. Each piece, akin to sculptures, beautifully integrates with the detailed walls, cornices and aged flooring, avoiding visual clutter. The surrounding terrace and landscape also serve as inviting spaces, drawing activity outward. Despite the solidity of the masonry home, strategic openings foster visual connections and enhance sightlines between previously enclosed spaces.
The timeless grace of Armytage House is maintained by WMK Architecture and Indre. The teams respect the residence’s heritage while adapting it to suit modern standards, creating a welcoming space for its current occupants.
