A story of the handmade, the film ‘Artisanally Articolo: The Makers’ explores the Melbourne lighting studio’s dedication to the craft of making.

As more and more industries turn to the ease of manufacture by machine, Articolo is a rare breed, inspired by and committed to the handmade. A designer and manufacturer of inimitable lighting collections that feature mouth-blown glass and hand-worked metal, Articolo is constantly evolving and adapting in a process akin to the activity of working and discovering through human touch. The film, ‘Artisanally Articolo: The Makers’, produced by Sirap, captures the essence of this spirit and highlights the important relationship between designer and maker.

Articolo is driven by creation through collaboration.

Steeped in the principles of quality and tactility and connected to craft in all facets of the business, Articolo is set apart as a maker of locally and handmade lighting offerings. Emerging from in-depth understanding of materials and fascination with the process of mouth-blowing glass, founder and creative director Nicci Green believes in the power of the handmade when it comes to the objects that populate our spaces and that we engage with daily. She says, “when something is made by hand, it becomes an expression of undeniable soul. The human touch of hands creating, and crafting is so special, something that cannot be replicated in machine-made glass and electroplated metal finishes.”

Articolo is driven by creation through collaboration. In addition to producing ‘Artisanally Articolo: The Makers’ with Paris Thompson of Sirap, and as a bi-product of the changes imposed through COVID-19, Nicci has also sought collaborations with other eager creatives. As a veteran of the industry, Nicci is no stranger to times of economic crisis, having commenced the now-established studio amid the fallout of the 2008 global financial crisis. “As we collectively navigate our way through these troubling times, I continue to find solace in creative collaboration,” she says. “Articolo simply would not exist without the exceptional skill of our artisan makers – our glassblowers, our metalworkers and our dedicated finishing artists. For this reason, we’ve used this time to capture their spirit and their dedication in our debut short film. I genuinely believe in the power of collaboration to help us through these uncertain times, and hope you find inspiration in this film, just as we do in working with the artisans of Articolo every day.”
