Inspired by the rituals of camping, Baker Boys Beach House sees the coming together of elemental forms to encourage gathering. Together with Flokk Interiors, Refresh Design creates a key focus on the surrounds, embedding the home in textural warmth and depth, cocooning its visitors.

Elevated and outreaching, Baker Boys Beach House sits nestled into the dense natural landscape of Minjerribah on North Stradbroke Island. The occasional home emerges as a place to gather in nature, to feel immersed yet protected amongst contemporary conveniences. Contrasting the surrounding organic and untamed species, the home is a linear and darkened form that deliberately takes a step back, allowing the natural to be heralded. The home opens generously, both to allow natural ventilation and to embrace solar gains, while the large glass openings remind occupants of their unique placement in such a setting. The coming together of Refresh Design and Flokk Interiors sees a layered and textural approach unfurl, marking itself as a unique and envied place to visit.

Camping references see elements that provide warmth, nurturing form, as they navigate the steeply sloping site.

Built by Bespoke Constructions, Baker Boys Beach House is a manifestation of the typical holiday home, reinterpreted through its own modern lens. The structure takes form as a series of spaces that come together around central gathering and convening spaces. Camping references see elements that provide warmth, nurturing form, as they navigate the steeply sloping site. Once inside, a feeling of rest and contentment takes over, made apparent by the framed portals to the surrounds that act as living portraits of the natural landscape, eliciting healing qualities of being within nature.

Designed to accommodate up to ten people, the home is imagined as bringing multiple groups together from three families, with enough support and basic amenities to feel contently taken care of. Similar in gest to elements coming together under a shared tarpaulin on a campsite, a butterfly-shaped roof provides shelter and protection from the elements. Responding to the needs of its three families, the resulting home underpins a sense of simplicity and calm, with a clear focus on place. The generous open living, dining and kitchen are encased in timber on multiple planes, adding texture and bringing an element of the outside in. Upper-level clerestory windows emphasise the roof structure, allowing it to float above and bring high level light inside, as curated views of the tree canopies can be seen throughout.

As Baker Boys Beach House generously opens to its setting, a series of considered insertions by Refresh Design and Flokk Interiors enable the home to feel deliberate and naturally occurring, further emphasising its purpose as a place of rest and recharge.
